Cockscombing

Cockscombing

My latest project...just thought I would share.  Looks cool but very labor intensive.

Re: Cockscombing

Hey Seef...
Glad your aboard!

Okay, for a moment I thought our forum got hacked... then I did a little research and here is what I found.

Cockscombing:
Cockscombing is a decorative form of hitching that is often used for rings rails and handles.  :educated:

Nice job on that Edson wheel.

Re: Cockscombing

I figured the subject would get at least a little attention.

The "humpers" was a very cool read.  I would have loved to have seen it! ;D

Re: Cockscombing

Very nice indeed!

I also found an interesting Navy-type word:  Cumshaw roll
It has nothing to do with line, rope, or tying knots (nor orgasm for that matter wink); it actually means some type of gratuity or gratitude...

It was probably British Navy personnel who first picked up "cumshaw" in Chinese ports, during the First Opium War of 1839–42. "Cumshaw" is from a word that means "grateful thanks" in the dialect of Xiamen, a port in southeast China.

I can hear it now--some British sailor with the runs thanking a Chinese medicine man/doctor at the dock:  "Cumshaw very much 'ol chap...that opium you gave me last night for my diarrhea was brilliant! Cheers and cumshaw again!! :occasion14:

By the way, are you gonna seal the line in some way to prevent staining by sweat, sunscreen, etc?
I'd also like to know if a coxswain knows how to cockscomb?
Just curious... ;D

Re: Cockscombing

Is that the wheel of your Waterman in the above photo? Curious... how long did that take?

Re: Cockscombing

Yep, that's the wheel on above waterman.  A friend of mine talked me through learning how to do the cockscombing, I taught myself, from a book, the turk's heads that "terminate" each end.  So, I had to practice quite a bit before I started on the wheel.  It took me ten hours.  I worked on it for a couple hours a day for 5 days.  The hardest part is tightening down the turk's heads.  You have to cinch each strand individually around and around until the whole knot comes tight.  Do you have an edson, or edson type wheel on your whipray?  Hell's Bay now offers an edson wheel with the knot work for $450.00 or so extra as an option.  The guy that does most of the work for them taught me.

Re: Cockscombing

I thought Hell's Bay had the wheel with rope work as an option.  But, I think I saw it on another website.  Ooops!
